Perhaps the more pertinent question should be, ‘Is the Champions League more important than the Premier league right now?’ According to Robert Pires, Arsene Wenger has placed the Premier League as first priority. Everything else is a sideshow.
There are those Arsenal fans that believe it would be better to exit from the Champions League in the group stage to be able to concentrate on the Premier League. They have a point as the team would not have the option of overexerting themselves on a midweek feature especially considering the number of injuries we are already dealing with and the crazy Christmas period where games will come in thick and fast.
However, I am from the school of thought who believe Arsenal need to qualify from the group stage as losing out would be detrimental to the confidence of the team. The players need to test themselves against the best to stay motivated and focused. Besides, majority of the players are slotted to return in December and early January which will boost the team.
I also do not believe Arsene Wenger would want to lose the proud record of qualifying from the Champions League group stage for any reason whatsoever so rest assured he will send his team out very motivated especially after the disappointment of the weekend loss to West Brom.
If Arsenal win against Dinamo Zagreb tomorrow and Bayern Munich throw us a lifeline by sneaking a win past Olympiakos, rest assured Arsenal will qualify from the group stage. I doubt whether Olympiakos would be able to deal with an Arsenal team hell bent on revenge and playing the type of slick football we expect of them. Of course, a lot depends on the performances of both Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
Arsenal have been in this situation before in 2004 needing a huge win against Inter Milan. They delivered then and there is no reason they can’t deliver now!
